Newborns (0-4 Months): The "Hold-Out" Phase

Rebecca Larsen coined this stage of toilet learning as the “Hold-Out” Phase based on the old-school term of “holding the baby out.” Newborns will instinctively “hold it” to avoid soiling their clothes, parents, or bedding, and will readily eliminate when held in the classic EC hold and cued with a sound association (usually “pss pss”).

Most parents in the USA skip this toileting step, usually because they don’t know that it’s even an option. However, regular potty use in the newborn stage is important for maintaining sphincter control from a young age, avoiding diaper rash and infections, and minimizing blowouts and cloth diaper laundry.
